In December 2005, Dave Gorum worked with Jason Nelson to design a simple tool for online portfolio management. In 2007, they were joined by Spencer Fry and continued to expand Carbonmade.
Carbonmade has faster loading and a more professional presentation than many portfolio hosting sites. It is simple and uncluttered with a free option that is perfect for artists just starting an online portfolio.
Carbonmade is visually appealing and fun to use. Each page features colorful, fun images and silly text.
Uploading is simple and when finished, a user is given the opportunity to change the thumbnail for the project, add a category, hide the project, determine display options, add a title or caption, add client name, and note any information.
Users may add an email address for those viewing the portfolio to use to contact the artist. Location and telephone numbers may also be added if desired. Users may also choose to write a short biography and use tags for areas of expertise and skills. A profile pic is also optional.
Once uploaded, the portfolio is very professional in presentation. Do not be put off by the playful homepage and application pages. The final portfolios are very professional looking.
A portfolio title, web address (for the portfolio with a .carbonmade.com extension), full name, email address, and password are required. Once provided, the user is taken to the Add a Project screen.
The “Meh” plan is free and allows users to build an online portfolio of 5 projects with up to 35 images total. The “Whoo” plan, for $12/month, offers 50 projects with 500 images and 10 videos with domain binding, ad-free, video and flash projects, and tech support.
Any artist, photographer, illustrator, makeup artist, graphic designer, or student who would like to maintain a portfolio hosted online. Any artisan or professional who uses a portfolio to showcase their work can benefit from Carbonmade.
